Raiders! Join your fellow students and give back to your community at the Inaugural Day of Service on Saturday, Sept. 26.
This annual event from Grand Rapids Community College’s Center for High Impact Experiences is taking place on Saturday, Sept. 26, and gives any student the opportunity to choose from nine volunteer opportunities with nonprofit and community organizations throughout Kent and Ottawa counties. There are 8 opportunities to choose from, including helping with tasks at the Critter Barn, planting trees around Garfield Park with Grand Rapids Parks, assisting with an event at Gilda’s Club, working at the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum, and more.
No experience is needed. Students register through Raider Connect for one morning or afternoon volunteer session, with opportunities beginning as early as 7:30 a.m. and all ending by 4 p.m. Volunteer sessions generally last between three and four hours, and there is no need to stay for an entire day.
Michael Schavey is the Executive Director at the Center for High Impact Experiences. When asked about the importance of this event, he said, “It’s an opportunity to step outside the classroom, connect with other GRCC students, learn about organizations doing important work throughout our community, and recognize that they can make a meaningful contribution.”
Sites for each opportunity are all around Kent and Ottawa counties, and students are responsible for their own transportation. Spots are limited, so sign up as soon as possible.
