Two armed robberies occurred Nov. 28 at approximately 7:20 p.m. near Grand Rapids Community College’s Main Campus.

The robberies are currently under investigation by the Grand Rapids Police Department. The first robbery occurred at Lafayette Avenue and Crescent Street. The second occurred at Barclay Avenue and Crescent Street.

During both incidents, police reported that the victim was walking on the sidewalk when approached by two subjects who asked what time it was. The subjects then demanded the victim’s wallet and other possessions. Police said the suspects threatened the first victim with a gun, and it is believed the gun was used to hit the second victim in the face after resisting.

Police encourage students, staff, faculty and community members to be cautious.

Safety Tips

  • Be alert and aware of your surroundings
  • Walk in pairs
  • If you would like an on-campus escort, contact Campus Police at (616) 234-4010.
  • It is best if you can limit the amount of valuables you carry with you to and from the campus. This would include large amounts of cash, credit cards, Higher One Cards, personal identification (like social security cards, birth certificates), electronics, etc. If you can avoid keeping those items on you, it will limit the amount of loss you will face if you become a victim.
  • It is also recommended to not resist by fighting or getting in a tug-of-war with your purse or backpack. Items can be replaced.
