The Grand Rapids Community College women’s basketball team defeated Ancilla College to record their first back-to-back wins of the season.
“It’s fantastic!” said Raiders Head Coach Tracy Little. “The girls are working so hard and it feels everything is starting to come together”.
The Raiders were ferocious on defense forcing 18 first half turnovers. Freshman guard Stephanie Stephens led the Raiders with 13 points. Ancilla guard Kayoa Richardson had 15 points to keep Ancilla in the game. The Raiders led at halftime 33-26.
In the second half, the Raiders focused on shutting down Richardson, and they did just that. Richardson was held to only six points. Stephens continued to find ways to score adding another 15 points.
The Raiders committed only eight turnovers to Ancilla’s 28. The Raiders surged in the second half, out-scoring Ancilla 38-20 in route to a 71-46 victory.
The Raiders had three players in double figures. Stephens led the team with 28 points, Allysa VandenBerge had 12 and Kayla Roniski added 10. Stephens also had eight rebounds and six steals.
Stephens leads the team this year in scoring averaging 12.9 points per game.
“I have an amazing coaching staff. There are a lot of things happening behind the scenes. We are entering conference play and we hope are just going to continue to work hard every day,” Little said.
The Raiders currently hold a 5-9 overall record. They will travel to Jackson Community College on Wednesday and then will host Lansing Community College on Friday at the Ford Fieldhouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
