On April 22, 1970, over 20 million Americans lined the streets coast-to-coast, in protest, to raise awareness for a healthy and sustainable environment. The protest was founded by Gaylord Nelson after seeing the aftermath of the oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Acts like the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act were created after the first official Earth Day. Today every year people around the globe continue to celebrate this day.
