The Food Pantry at Grand Rapids Community College opened today, offering free necessities to students in need.
Utilizing the Food Pantry
The Food Pantry has no restrictions yet, as long as students apply to use it and are taking at least one class on campus. The Food Pantry is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m-4:30 p.m. People interested in volunteering at, donating to or receiving supplies from the pantry should visit the Student Life office on the first floor of the Student Center.
Student Life
“It’s a service for students to help them make it through the day,” said Kaylee Wolff, Graduate Assistant for Service Initiative. “We don’t want hunger to distract students in their classrooms.”
Wolff is running the food pantry program for the first time this year.
“I’m very excited,” Wolff said. “I’m not really nervous at all. I think I’ve had enough time to prepare.”
Donations
Students will be able to donate food that is nonperishable, such as canned food. Student Life accepts bathroom supplies and toiletries. Ashleigh Begres, Graduate Assistant for Campus Programming, also helps out with the food pantry.
“Students would have to bring any donation to the office of student life,” Begres said. “You are also able to donate clothes for the winter.
“It’s just unfortunate we don’t receive a lot of that stuff.”
