The Grand Rapids Community College women’s basketball team defeated Jackson College Jets 78-63 on Wednesday.
“We just wanted to make sure that we made them earn their baskets,” said Head Coach Ray Kimball, about the mindset the team had going into the game. “Second and third quarter I thought we did an outstanding job defensively.
“Fourth quarter, even when you have a big lead, you gotta learn to keep your focus, you gotta learn to keep your intensity, and close out the game.”
The Raiders did finish strong defensively, holding the Jets to only six points for the entire second quarter, and keeping the Jets down by at least 15 points for most of the game.
“When we focus and are locked in, create ball pressure and take away their penetration, we do a great job,” Kimball said.
Sophomore Deiona Rogers said the team’s mentality for the game was “quarter by quarter.”
Rogers said, “We win each quarter, we win the game.”
It proved to be that way because the Raiders shot better from the field, 39 percent compared to 33 percent for the game. The Raiders shot better from three-point range as well, 32 percent compared to 21 percent for the game.
