The GRCC women’s basketball team defeated Lansing Community College 87-56 Friday night.
“When everybody does their job, no matter at what end of the floor it is, we have the ability to be an awfully successful team,” said GRCC Head Coach Ray Kimball. “It isn’t a difficult game when we do things right.”
GRCC started out slow, ending the first half ahead 40-33, but would pick it up in second, rallying behind sophomores Deiona Rogers and Courtney Zenner.
Zenner finished with 31 points, setting a career high of nine made 3-pointers and Rogers would finish with 33 points, beating her own season-high of 30.
“When I get hype, my team get’s hype,” Rogers said. “So if I’m down, we’re usually not that happy, – not that energetic.”
Rogers has been a top scorer for the team, averaging 22 points-per-game and is leading the team in steals, assists and rebounds.
“We feed off of Deiona for energy,” Zenner said. “That’s why every time she’s been hype, we (have) won the last few games.”
Rogers was also named the NJCAA Player of the Week (Feb. 1-7)
“I’m just happy my team is doing well most of all,” Rogers said. “I couldn’t get it without them.”
The team is currently on a six-game winning streak and are hopeful to extend that to seven when they play at Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor on Wednesday Feb. 17.
