This week’s list of events includes Whitecaps baseball games, an art exhibit, a dance party at the Pyramid Scheme and a Memorial Day celebration at the Berlin Raceway.
The Grand Rapids Soul Club will perform at the Pyramid Scheme at 9:30 p.m. Friday. Grand Rapids Soul Club is a collective of DJs that play a fusion of soul, R&B and funk music. Admission is $7 and the show is for ages 21 and up.
Frederik Meijer Gardens has a collection of Italian sculptor, painter and graphic designer Mimmo Paladino’s art on display until Aug. 14. The exhibit is titled “Mimmo Paladino: Present into Past” and has been installed in the Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory. Paladino is known for his work during the transavantgarde art movement of the 1980s and 1990s. Admission is $14.50 for adults, but students get in for $11 with college ID. The Berlin Raceway will host the “Sweet Express Memorial Day Race” to benefit the Ionia County Young Marines on Saturday. Pit gates open at 1:30 p.m. and the track gates open at 3 p.m. The race features Outlaw Late Models, Modified, Sportsman and 4-Cylinder race cars. Practice starts at 3 p.m. and the qualifying race starts at 4 p.m. with an autograph session and fireworks following the race. Admission is free for all active duty and retired veterans, general admission is $12, Nascar premium tickets are $25 and pit passes are $30. Domestic beer and hotdogs are $1 during the event. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online at the Berlin Raceway website.
The West Michigan Whitecaps will face the Dayton Dragons four times this holiday weekend. The home games take place at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the Fifth Third Ballpark. There will be fireworks after the games on Friday and Saturday. Saturday is also Planet of the Apes Night. On Sunday, guests will have the opportunity to build their own signs at the Aquafina Sign Making Station before the game and Buddy the Dinosaur will make an appearance. There are multiple promotions for the game on Monday, including a dog tag giveaway, $1 Johnsonville brats and half off box or reserved seating with any church or community bulletin flier. Ticket prices range from $7 to $25 depending on seating choice.
