Grand Rapids Community College offers a wide array of scholarships to aid students in their education. There are over 200 scholarships ranging from computer graphics design, golf, culinary, and much more. In total, GRCC offers around $450,000 in scholarships to students.
GRCC’s new Coordinator of Scholarships and Financial Aid is Sarah Laycock said the school has a new online application program for scholarships.
The most important thing to take into consideration when applying is to fully complete the application.
Academic Works is the website used by GRCC for the application process.
“We use Academic Works. That’s where you can apply. We are able to look at their applications for scholarships.
“List off all their volunteer activities. We want to see where they excel. They should do everything they can to promote their activities,” advised Laycock.
Laycock advised students to completely fill out the application.
“It opens the beginning of January and the deadline is March 15,” Laycock said. “You should look online as some scholarships have a different deadline than is listed online.”
“This is the second academic year using Academic works. It allows us to best match up a student with the relevant scholarships”, Laycock said.
Certain scholarships are available to minorities and other special circumstances, such as having a family member in the military or certain financial hardships.
“They should include volunteer activities, or any barriers or hardships they’ve had,” Laycock said. “There are also a few scholarships that require essays.”
There are a number of transfer scholarships available at GRCC. Graduate Transfer scholarships are awarded by the school that is offering them on a financial need and academic basis. These scholarships are posted outside of the Financial Aid office from November through April each year. Some of the schools offering these transfer scholarships are Aquinas College, Ferris State University, Northwood University, and Western Michigan University. This is an incomplete list of schools offering transfer scholarships. The full list is available in the student aid and scholarships section of the GRCC website.
Many scholarships are available to new and returning students at community college. All students regardless of their major are encouraged to apply for scholarships from the college as you may not even realize you qualify for certain scholarships. The college may offer scholarship workshops in the coming months. Any available workshops would be posted on the financial aid page.
Applications for scholarships are available at the GRCC Financial Aid Office, 156 Main Building, or by visiting the GRCC website’s Financial Aid page. The current academic year’s deadline has passed but applications will be accepted beginning January 2017.
