The Grand Rapids Community College Raiders took on the Calvin Knight Invite Saturday, Sept. 7 at Calvin College’s Gainey Athletic Complex in Kentwood.
The women kicked off the invitational race with a 6k race. Carolanne Merlington finished with a time of 25:11, Diana Candela with a time of 25:47 and Allison Hoop finished with a time of 26:10.
The men’s team also had a strong start to the season running an 8k, with William Westveer finishing with a time of 28:37, Matthew Converse with a time of 29:22 and lastly Jack Kehoe with a time of 29:41.
Matthew Sicilia, the head coach for the Raiders Cross Country Team, is entering his sixth year as coach.
Sicilia said he is optimistic about the upcoming season.
“Our goal is to work hard each day and strive to be there for each other in daily life, training, and racing,” Sicilia stated in an email to The Collegiate.

“Our women’s team is striving to qualify for the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) National Championships as a team for the first time in school history. The men’s team (has) worked really well together in workouts and have the potential to qualify as individuals for the NJCAA National Race in Albuquerque, New Mexico.”
The next cross country meet will take place Friday, Sept. 20 at Riverside Park where GRCC will host the Knight-Raider Invite with the Calvin College Knights beginning at 2 p.m.
