Starting this week, Grand Rapids Community College’s TRIO (student support services) will be hosting their annual Power of Education Foundation fundraiser.
TRIO students will be selling apples and donuts from 11 a.m – 2 p.m at three locations around campus Oct. 21- 31. They will be located on the first floor of Calkins Science Center, fourth floor Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall (formally Main Building) and the first floor of the Student Center.
All of the money raised at the fundraiser will be going directly toward tuition for Samuel, the student that is sponsored by the fundraiser. Samuel is the second student that GRCC has sponsored through the Power Of Education Foundation fundraiser, he is in second grade at a school in Haiti.
Alliance Professional Support Staff and TRIO staff member Maggie Montes-Spruit, said “The $600 tuition will cover him for the whole year, and that includes summer as well … his books, medical care while he is there and also his meals while he is there.”
The Power Of Education Foundation was founded in Dec. of 2009, “on the belief that every child should be able to go to school, It was born from a dream of three people in two different countries who met by chance and now partner to educate some of the most vulnerable children in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.”
GRCC has been partnering with them for ten years now. Before Samuel they sponsored a different student, who is now in highschool because she was able to be sponsored all throughout elementary school.
“It’s important to us because we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to get educated,” Montes says.
