After an extended hiatus due to COVID-19, the Grand Rapids Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams will take the court on Feb. 19.
Both teams had their seasons shifted from the fall to the winter semester and were previously set to start on Feb. 9. While they were beginning to ramp up practices for the season, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer halted contact sports on Jan. 13, a decision that was later upheld by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
On Feb. 4, the order was lifted, allowing for the GRCC men’s and women’s basketball teams to return to practice. However, the Feb. 9 game start date for the teams was no longer viable. In an effort to give the teams ample time to prepare for the shortened 2021 season, their competition start date was pushed back to Feb. 19.
The GRCC men’s and women’s basketball teams will tip-off their seasons in the Gordon Hunsberger Arena, as they face off against the Jayhawks of Muskegon Community College. The women’s team will take the court first at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.
Fans won’t be allowed into the Ford Fieldhouse for the team’s games, but a recent partnership between GRCC and Michigan Sports Radio will allow for spectators to watch the game via a live-stream on the GRCC Athletics YouTube channel.
The games will also be archived on the GRCC Athletics YouTube channel for fans to watch the contests when it fits their schedule.
