The Grand Rapids Community College men’s and women’s cross country teams are gearing up to compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II National Championship on Saturday, Nov. 13 in Richmond, Virginia.
“We are waiting in the Detroit airport now to fly to Richmond,” wrote women’s head coach Sharon Becker to The Collegiate. “It was a super early morning flight at 5:30 a.m. from Grand Rapids. We will be running when we arrive in Richmond but I’m sure we will be taking some time to rest this afternoon!”
The men’s team finished second overall out of 14 teams in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association and Regional XII Championship. The team was led by freshman Coleman Clark, who finished first overall individually, and redshirt-freshman Joshua Kipkoech who finished second overall. These runners will likely be favorites in the national tournament to finish in higher positioning.
The women’s team also finished second overall out of seven teams in the MCCAA Regional XII Championship. True freshman Kaylee Scott and redshirt-freshman Audrey Meyering excelled once more, as both runners finished with personal records of 19:47 in a tie.
“Friday we will preview the race course and really start to get (mentally) prepared for the big race on Saturday,” wrote Becker. “It is a huge honor and privilege to be here. The athletes know they are here to run to the best of their abilities. We are excited to be part of a great event with so many other NJCAA DI and DII teams participating.”
The women’s NJCAA DII Championship is at 1 p.m. followed by the men’s at 2 p.m.
