Grand Rapids Community College’s enrollment is down with the college enrolling less students than last year during both summer 2022 semesters.

About 5,816 students enrolled, which is about 9.6% behind last year’s figure, but very close to 2020’s enrollment, according to GRCC Communications Director Dave Murray.

Summer enrollment levels tend to increase during the second summer semester, which they did this year as the summer enrollment headcount for the second semester was 5,913, which is 10.3% down from 2021, and 3.7% down from 2020.

When asked about summer enrollment being down in comparison to other years, Murray said, “We know this is a time when many people are putting their education on hold while working. We’re focused on making classes accessible to those people juggling classes with job and family responsibilities. That includes online classes, and seven-week sessions.”

Many students are taking advantage of the online delivery method, with about half attending classes in-person and the other half taking classes online, according to Murray. The online format has been found to be popular for students who are working during the summer and trying to plan summer activities and need something more flexible to fit their schedule. Online classes allow students to take GRCC wherever they go.

With online classes being a more popular option during the summer, it has given some the impression that there aren’t many students enrolled in  summer classes. In actuality, the college is far from deserted with many students logging in virtually.
