The Grand Rapids Community College Volleyball team clinched at least a share of the MCCAA Northern Conference title and guaranteed themselves a spot in the conference tournament, Tuesday, Oct 11, defeating the Delta College Pioneers.
Delta College arrived late to the arena and gametime was delayed half an hour.
“I think as a whole we were having a bit of an off night,” Torres said. “With the game starting later, we did a lot of waiting around… it was tough warming up for so much longer than we usually do and I think it affected our play.”
Despite only hitting .177 for the match the Raiders managed to take out the Pioneers in straight sets, 25-20, 25-17, 25-17.
Sophomore Eliza Thelen led the Raiders on offense with 12 kills, while Torres added 11 of her own.
Sophomore Shannon Russell was all over the court, tallying 30 assists with four aces and seven digs.
The hard-fought win brings the Raiders to 17-2 on the season and 9-0 in conference play. They are also the proud owners of a 17-game win streak with no intention of slowing down.
“It’ll be super important for us to simply worry about our side of the net,” Torres said. “If we start playing down to the level of our competition it will make it really hard for us to climb back. We can’t afford to let up because once we start playing better teams in the postseason it’ll be extremely difficult to come back. We will keep finding success if we just play our game and not worry about who is on the other side of the net.”
The Raiders look to tack on another win when they take on the Kalamazoo Valley Community College Cougars, Thursday Oct. 13, at Calvin University. Gametime is 7 p.m. The match is being held at Calvin due to the College and Transfer Fair being held at GRCC.
