Earthly Refillery in Grand Rapids

Earthly Refillery is a new eco-friendly business opening today in Grand Rapids and aiming to cut down on the use of plastic and environmental waste. Students looking to be more environmentally conscious while supporting a small local business can come shop at Earthly Refillery at 1409 Robinson Road for everyday items.

“Everyone has a big impact on the world,” said Anna Crooks, owner and creator of Earthly Refillery. “I know a lot of people are like, ‘What difference does it make if I do it? I’m just one small person,’ but… we all have to work together. Just one person changing it can lead to a big change, getting your friends to do it and just doing whatever changes you can do at the time.”

For those who may not know a refillery is a low waste service allowing customers to bring in their own bottles to refill with goods such as body wash, shampoo, lotions and other soaps while being charged per ounce. Glass bottles will also be available for sale at Earthly Refillery.

“All of the refill products are by the ounce so you can get as little or as much as you want, which is nice because you’re not buying a whole bottle,” said Crooks. “I am trying to do this for a good reason. I’m not just trying to make a profit off things.”

Not only does Earthly Refillery offer a refill service, but also sells other eco-friendly products such as: reusable paper towels, bar soap, environmentally friendly toothbrushes and hair brushes, reusable makeup wipes, various bamboo products as well as biodegradable trash bags and plastic free cling wrap. Crooks even offers plastic free dog toys as well as biodegradable doggy bags.

Along with all the eco-friendly products available, Earthly Refillery offers a recycling service for anyone to bring in items such as: empty pet food bags, disposable masks and other things that you’re able to recycle free of charge.

“My main goal is to be a one-stop shop, so eventually I want to have food items like bulk teas, bulk spices, and bulk grains for people to come get those things too,” Crooks said.

Crooks plans to expand her goods and services as time goes on. She said she hopes more people will realize how important it is to be eco-friendly with a rapidly decaying environment. Shopping at her refillery gives local residents a chance to make a difference and Crooks appreciates the community support for what she’s taking on.

“It means a lot because I am doing something for the community,” Crooks said. “I am doing something good.”

Crooks is now embracing the small business life in a place that is home to many small local businesses. Not only are you able to support the environment but you are also helping out the community by giving back for these goods and services.

Shops like Earthly Refillery help customers make choices to save the environment one purchase at a time. Crooks encourages shoppers to seek out other businesses that feature eco-friendly goods and services.

Earthly Refillery opens Tuesday, Nov 1. The store will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The store will be closed on Sundays and Mondays.
