GRCC students can workout for free at Ford Fieldhouse

By Amarah Stevenson

Have you ever wondered as a Grand Rapids Community College student what the Ford Fieldhouse is and what it has to offer?

The Fieldhouse was erected in 1976 and is located on Lyon Street on GRCC’s Main Campus in Grand Rapids. It has a newly renovated second floor which holds several classrooms, two gender-neutral bathrooms, and access to the sports arena where GRCC’s basketball and volleyball teams play. There is also a fitness center which is located on the bottom floor. It includes a locker room, showers and gender-neutral bathrooms. The pool and free weight room are on the opposite side of the building on the third floor.

Whitney Marsh, the director of the fieldhouse, said the facility is a great resource for students looking to workout on campus.

“As long as a student is taking one credit in the semester we are in, they are able to utilize the facility for free.” Marsh said.

A RaiderCard is required to gain access to the facility. Once you swipe in, you have access to everything mentioned above. Students can also participate in open gyms for numerous activities such as basketball and pickleball to name a few, use the track and check out equipment as long as they have a RaiderCard on file.

As long as the fieldhouse is open, students have access to everything. The times of availability do change depending on the season so always double check before heading to the fieldhouse. This semester it is open from 6 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday – Thursday and 6 a.m.- 5 p.m. on Fridays. The facility is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

GRCC student Nick Smith, likes to play basketball and hit the weightroom so he uses the fieldhouse quite often.

“I love how convenient it is,” Smith said.  “I can get a full workout in and still have time for class and homework. Being able to workout for free is also a plus.”

So if you’re a GRCC student, you might want to ditch that Planet Fitness membership and come workout in the Fieldhouse for free.
