The No. 12 ranked Grand Rapids Community College men’s soccer team continued its four-match winning streak as they used a heavy offensive attack to defeat Cornerstone JV by a score of 7-1.

The Raiders spent no time messing around, as freshman striker Chibambo Munguakonkwa scored in the first six minutes off a penalty kick. However, the Eagles responded immediately, scoring within minutes on a penalty kick to tie the game.

Freshman striker Jordan Marquez got a cross-pass from freshman defender Alexander Harrington, leading to the Raiders’ second goal.

Just one minute later, GRCC capitalized on a perfect opportunity as freshman striker Mohamed Tamour, the nation’s leading scorer, scored his first goal of the game on a breakaway.

The game slowed down after Tamour’s goal, as both teams stalled for a short period of time. Freshman winger Lucas Freriks had multiple chances to score, but was unable to capitalize.

With 13:37 remaining in the first half, freshman winger Alexander Lagazo scored by a bottom-left shot that the Eagle goalie was unable to defend.

Heading into halftime, the Raiders held a 4-1 lead while dominating the time of possession. GRCC outshot the Eagles 16-2 while also having two more corner kicks.

It was more of the same for GRCC in the second half as they pressured the Eagles’ defense for the rest of the match.

About seven minutes in, Tamour scored his second goal of the game with an assist from freshman striker Elijah Maas. Tamour has 19 goals on the season and is second in the nation in points scored with 39.

At the 55-minute mark, Tamour made a cross-pass to Freriks, resulting in another Raider goal.

GRCC continued to dominate the game while getting as many players in as possible.

Lagazo doubled his season total in goals after he scored his second goal of the game which was assisted by Maas. Maas has 11 total assists on the season putting him top-5 in the nation.

The Raiders’ defense continued to control the game as they only allowed one shot in the second half along with zero goals. GRCC cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Cornerstone JV Eagles.

Following the victory, GRCC improves to 9-1-1 on the season with a 5-0-1 conference record. The Raiders return to conference action on Oct. 5 as they host Jackson College at MacKay-Jaycees Park at 4 p.m.
