Grand Rapids Community College’s TRiO Student Services and the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans (SACNAS) in Science will be holding poster presentations and a summer research fair on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
GRCC students who participated in the Summer 2023 Michigan College and University Partnership at Michigan Tech and a TRIiO study trip abroad to the Netherlands will be presenting their research posters and presentations, along with possible research opportunities available for students.
Emily Sanchez, the President of SACNAS, wants students who might be interested in the opportunities to attend.
“This type of opportunity is out there and they can access that because I feel that a lot of students aren’t aware of these opportunities.” Sanchez said.
Emily Esqueda, the Vice President of SACNAS, also talked about the importance of this event to bring people together in the same field.
“I work for TRiO as a student worker and I feel like I get a lot of students who apply that feel lost and don’t know what they’re doing,” Esqueda said. “Honestly for me, I really want students to come in, especially those I can relate to as a first generation (student) and just give them that information that this is out there and (tell them) ‘you can do it.’”
Sanchez encourages students to not be afraid and to attend the event.
“I know it’s easy to say, but don’t be afraid to put yourself out there,” Sanchez said. “Just go, even if it’s uncomfortable for you and attend the event, network, and go talk to people because it’s gonna help you at the end of the day.”
The event will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 1 from 11 a.m – 3 p.m on the first floor of the science building.
