After originally leaving it up to individual faculty members to decide whether to not to show the active shooter response video in class, Grand Rapids Community College administrators changed course and sent the safety video directly to students this afternoon, almost nine weeks into the semester.

Campus Safety Awareness Week was last month, but at GRCC, safety is a year-round priority. Please review the many safety support resources provided at GRCC,” stated the communications department in the email containing the video.

The Collegiate interviewed several students on Sept. 24, asking if they had seen GRCC’s active shooter response video that the administration requested professors be in charge of sharing with their classes. After many students stated that they had not seen the video and wished it had been directly sent to them, The Collegiate wrote an editorial, asking the administration to do just that.

About a month later, the GRCC Communications Department sent out an email to students that included the active shooter response video, giving them a more direct way to learn about GRCC campus safety protocols.

In this email to students, GRCC also provided additional information about the Behavioral Intervention Team, GRCC Police, building access and other safety resources across campus.
