The Grand Rapids Community College women’s soccer team was eager to end their three-game losing streak against Muskegon Community College on Oct. 14, but fell short in a tense battle, losing 0-3.

The first half started off slow for the Raiders, who only took three shots throughout compared to MCC’s nine shots, one of which resulted in a goal within the first five minutes off of a breakaway.

The Jayhawks were able to score once again before the first half concluded, leaving the Raiders with a 0-2 disadvantage.

The second half  was much more competitive, with GRCC taking four shots and MCC taking six. While the Raider’s were unable to find the net, MCC managed to score once more , securing their victory over GRCC, 0-3.

The second half proved to be tense between the two teams, as three GRCC players received yellow cards for their actions.

Freshman midfielder Amelia Hancock received a yellow card for taunting.

Freshman midfielder Brooklyn Williams received a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Freshman midfielder Samantha Hunting received a yellow card for aggression after the play.

“It’s a physical fast-paced game,” Head Coach Jason Hill said about his team’s yellow cards. “Fouls aren’t personal and are part of the game. You have to stay on your game and keep working hard.”

Despite the tough loss, freshman forward Abby Buttermore said this was a valuable learning experience for not only herself, but for her team, too.

“When games like this arise, we just need to focus on remaining composed,” Buttermore said.  “It’s difficult to keep a level head during heated games, but I feel as though we are a better team when we are composed.”.

The Raiders will face off against MCC again on Oct. 18, and Hill wants his team to remain composed during the game.

“It’s one game, we have to get back on track, keep our composure and keep playing with passion,” Hill said.

GRCC is now 6-11 overall and 4-11 in conference play. They face off against MCC again on Oct. 18 at MacKay-Jaycees Park at 2 p.m.
