It was a tough day for the Grand Rapids Community College women’s soccer team as they lost to St. Clair County Community College on Oct. 7 in Port Huron with a score of 1-5.

It’s been an up and down season for the Raiders as they have lost the last five out of six and are now at a team record of 6-9 and a conference record of 4-9.

The Raiders’ kryptonite this season have been slow starts and GRCC’s head coach Jason Hill said that was the problem in Saturday’s loss.

Hill said he was “disappointed”  in his  team’s first half effort.

“We didn’t come out and establish our game and allowed our opponents to dictate the play,” Hill said. “We need to understand, the game is played at 100% from the moment the game starts.  Now if we can play the way we did in the second half when we decided to turn it on, we will be in a much better place.”

In the first two minutes of the game,  freshman forward Jessica Peters of St. Clair, scored a goal off a breakaway to make it 1-0. The Raiders responded with a goal  from freshman midfielder, Amelia Hancock, scoring her second goal of the season with a crossbar rebound.

That would be GRCC’s only goal of the game as St. Clair continued to be led by Peters as she scored three more goals in the first half to take the lead, 4-1 going into halftime.

It was clear that the Raiders were going into the second half with a different attitude as they played stronger defense and more aggressive offense as they kept St. Clair at bay with only three shots, while the Raiders took seven at the goal.

It wasn’t enough as Peters scored one more goal and the Raiders couldn’t respond as they would end the game with a defeat, 1-5.

The Raiders will continue their road stretch by traveling to Livonia to take on Schoolcraft College on Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.
