Have you ever wondered how to get more involved with campus life here at Grand Rapids Community College? The Campus Activities Board (CAB) is a student organization that is dedicated to helping students build connections here on campus.

On Oct. 20 of the 2023 fall semester, CAB will be hosting GRCC’s first Homecoming dance. Dates will soon be announced for an upcoming tabling event where students can get their free tickets that allow them to bring one guest.

CAB president Brayden Smith expressed his excitement for the event.

“We’re really trying to knock it out of the park,” said Smith. “We’re doing a chocolate fountain…I’m trying to get fire pits for students to sit around, professional lighting, and we’re going to have a DJ. It’s gonna be really cool”

When deciding what events to plan, CAB pulls inspiration from multiple sources but tries to keep the students at the forefront.

“A lot of it is just from students and what they want to see on campus,” Smith said.

Additionally, CAB had the opportunity to attend the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) conference for the first time last year, where they viewed demos from various artists, magicians, and comedians with the option to potentially book them for an event here at GRCC.

During this showcase, CAB was introduced to the mental health-centric comedy show Stressed AF, which will be coming to campus later this semester on Dec. 5.

The funding for these events is attached to each student’s tuition bill, with part-time students paying $5, and full-time students paying $10.

“ (The funds) get put in this huge pot and student government takes it and distributes it. There’s a budget for them, other student organizations, the food pantry, and we usually take 33% of that total, and that all goes to the events you see around campus,” Smith said.

CAB hosts general assembly meetings every other Thursday in room 234 of the Student Center from 2-3 p.m. where students have the opportunity to get involved or share ideas. The next meeting is Oct. 12.
