The Grand Rapids Community College Student Government held its fourth town hall meeting of the semester and discussed the completion of the Student Game Room, which will have a grand opening celebration on April 4 from 1-3 p.m. in room 005 of level G2 at Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall (RJF).
“I’ve been in communications with Robert Green about the student game room and it is officially opening on April 4,” said Vice President Michael Zazzo. “We’re throwing a grand opening with food, an up-and-running ping pong table, a TV for students to hook up their gaming consoles, and everything will be set up and ready to go.”
A topic of discussion was the future additions to the game room. A few suggestions included a pool table, air hockey table, foosball table and a gaming console provided by the college.
“If you’re looking for a dedicated spot to socialize with other students, the student game room will be the spot for you,” Zazzo said.
The meeting started at a later time due to the Higher Learning Commission hosting a luncheon which the Student Government attended and spoke at. The meeting was also moved from the Lakeshore Campus to the Main Campus due to the luncheon.
Student Government President Alex Miranda started the meeting by announcing that the organization is in the process of going through applications for the three open positions: Communications Director, Vice President and Treasurer. These positions include a one-year commitment from May-May 2025 and applications are available on Raider Connect until March 31.
“I think we have pretty good traction for the open positions,” Miranda said. “There’s a few applicants on the roster and we still plan on holding interviews in April.”
Next, the Student Government congratulated the award winners from the Student Leadership Award Ceremony. Zazzo won the Cedric and Sandy Leadership Award while many other members of Student Government were nominated for different awards.
A noticeable announcement Student Government made was their proposal of equalizing the Campus Activities Fee which has been accepted and supported by the Board of Trustees. It was accepted on Monday, March 25.
“It was officially approved Monday so starting next academic year in the fall, the Student (Campus) Activities Fee will be $10 for both part-time students and full-time students,” Miranda said. “We got a lot of support for it so it feels good to get it passed.”
The town hall ended with an update on the treasurer’s report and any comments from the public. Student Government has a current budget of $6,074.33.
Student Government’s next meeting will be on Monday, April 8, from 12-2 p.m. at RJF room 108-109.
