Grand Rapids Community College’s music department presents the spring choral concert this Friday, April 12. The event will be held from 7-8 p.m. in the Royce Auditorium of the Saint Cecilia Music Center.
The concert will feature the Brahms Requiem, a German piece composed of seven movements that lasts around 65-80 minutes in total.
Colin Carpenter, a devoted member of the choir, explained the meaning of the piece.
“Brahms’ piece is a scripture. It’s a story told by a choir, almost an oratorio,” he said. “The first half (is) about the comfort of death and the value of life, and ends with German fugues and cries of frustration over the human condition.”
Carpenter says that the choir members have been practicing this piece at least two times per week since the beginning of the semester. He is excited for every attendee to see the performance and all of the hard work the students have put in, especially his own parents.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors/veterans, and free for any GRCC or Grand Rapids Public Schools student with a current ID.
