A new partnership between Grand Rapids Community College and The Rapid will allow both students and staff to get free bus transportation beginning on Monday, Aug. 26.
In order for a student to be eligible, they must be attending school during the current semester and have a current Wave card. To get a Wave card, students can submit an online form found in the student resources section of the GRCC online center.
Once their application has gone through, students will be notified when they can pick up their Wave card from the Student Life office with valid identification such as a RaiderCard or drivers license.
The application process is the same for staff members. Wave cards for staff members are valid for up to 12 months while students must renew theirs each semester.
Currently The Rapid has 28 bus routes, serving 185 square miles of Grand Rapids and its neighboring suburbs.
GRCC President Charles Lepper expressed excitement for the new initiative in a recent press release, explaining that he views it as a meaningful way to make education more accessible, leading to a more successful community.
“We recognize that many of our students face challenges in accessing essentials like food, housing, and transportation. Providing cost-free access to The Rapid is a meaningful step toward equity, removing barriers to education,” said Lepper.
