The Grand Rapids Community College Student Government and Campus Activities Board met for their second student leaders town hall on Oct. 9 and discussed the academic advising experience at the college.

This academic year, student government leaders were invited to be a part of the academic advising council to help provide the student perspective on advising at GRCC.

On Wednesday, the student leaders were joined by Ann Isackson, Associate Dean of Advising and Student Support, and Daniel Nyhof, associate professor and disability support services counselor, to get feedback on the advising experience.

“What we’re doing is we’re looking at academic advising through a number of different lenses,” Nyhof said. “We’re trying to get student feedback about their experiences with advising, both here and maybe other places… to help determine how academic advising may look in the future.”

Nyhof explained what student learning outcomes are, as they aim to provide a framework for students to get the most out of their counseling experience.

Goals presented by Nyhof and Isackson include providing students with personalized education timelines, more in-depth program information and requirements and more.

Feedback from the student leaders about their experience with academic advising at GRCC, including conversations about making drop deadlines clearer, potentially allowing students access to the syllabus before registering for the class and more information about how to use the platform Navigate.

When asked what “the single most important thing GRCC can do to improve the academic advising experience” CAB president Brayden Smith suggested check-ins, which was echoed by CAB secretary Amelia Haywood who shared that during her time as a dual-enrollment student she wished she had to meet with her adviser before beginning classes to get more information about how college works.

No allocation requests were heard during the Oct. 9 meeting.

The next town hall meeting will be on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m.
