The Democrats of Grand Rapids Community College will be hosting their first guest of the semester, mayoral candidate David LaGrand, on Wednesday, Oct. 2. LaGrand is one of two candidates left in the mayoral race taking place on Nov. 5.
Prior to running for mayor, the Grand Rapids native spent eight years working as the Assistant Kent County Prosecutor in addition to later serving as the second ward city commissioner from 2007 to 2010 and serving as a State Representative from 2015 to 2022. LaGrand has also helped open several businesses in the city, including Wealthy Street Bakery and Long Road Distillers.
Collin Helak, President of Democrats at GRCC, said that the goal of LaGrands’ visit is to “engage attending students with the issues affecting our city and how David plans to address them.”
A question and answer session with LaGrand will take place during the event and students will also be able to register to vote or check their voter registration status.
Open to all students, the Dems club kickoff event will begin at 3 p.m. in room 118 of the Applied Technology Center. Pizza, pop and baked goods will also be available.
