Is the holiday season really complete without a cup of hot cocoa and a classic Christmas movie? Students at Grand Rapids Community College are getting into the season with their all-time favorite holiday movies and sharing their classics with The Collegiate.

Jason Ramirez, 19, a business major who is also a first-year student, shared that his favorite movie was “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” “I grew up watching it. It never gets old. It’s one of those holiday movies that you can just sit and watch with your family and enjoy every time,” Ramirez said.

Destiney Solis, 21, who is attending GRCC for a certificate to advance her career in education, emphasized her love for the movie “Home Alone.”’

“I don’t know, there is just something about the movie that makes me so happy… I’ve been watching it since I was little and till this day I can watch it a thousand more times,” Solis said. “When I met my boyfriend, I made him watch it with me when December rolled around and now it has become a tradition. We are big movie fanatics especially during the Christmas season with all the festive movies whether it be new ones or classic old ones.”

Aiden Brown, 26, a computer science major, shared his love for “The Grinch.”

“The Grinch movies have always been some of my favorites. If I’m not wrong, I believe there’s a total of three,” Brown said. “When I was a little kid, I actually used to be terrified of the Grinch because my parents would always tell me how he was going to take my presents. I was always terrified as a kid but as I grew older I just looked back at it and (laughed).”

Emma Nguyen, 18, a first-year music major at GRCC, said her favorite Christmas movie is “The Polar Express.”

“The first time I watched it was back in like second grade. I remember becoming obsessed with the movie for some reason. Every time I watch it I just get hit with a wave of nostalgia and it’s turned into a comfort movie,” she said.

Avery Kempf, 18, who is a second-year student at GRCC, said  her favorite holiday movie is “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

“I know “Charlie Brown Christmas” is more of a short film rather than a whole movie, but it is still one of my favorites,” Kempf said. “One thing I really love about the whole thing is the soundtrack. I love listening to the soundtrack during this season because it just fills me up with so much joy and nostalgia.”

As we hop into the most wonderful time of the year, make sure to grab some snacks and binge-watch some of these Christmas movies over your winter break!
