Trespassing and hit and run reported at GRCC

Hit and run in Ramp A

On Thursday, Oct. 24, at 8:15 p.m. Grand Rapids Community College police were alerted to a report of a possible hit and run at Parking Ramp A on Bostwick Avenue. According to the victim she had parked her vehicle at 9 a.m. and when she returned at 4 p.m. she noticed her vehicle was damaged on the rear driver’s side bumper. Later an officer checked the dispatch cameras but was unable to locate the suspect vehicle. No witnesses have come forward either. 

Trespass at Ramp A

On Friday, Oct. 25, at 10:30 a.m. officers were dispatched to the northwest corner of Parking Ramp A on a report of a suspected homeless individual sleeping between the fourth and fifth floors. Upon arriving, officers located the woman in the elevator stairwell between the fourth and fifth floors. After being woken up and providing a photo ID to the officers she became uncooperative and stopped openly talking to the officers. She was let off with a warning and left without further issue.

Fight reported at Bostwick Ave

On Friday, Oct. 25 at 12:52 p.m. officers were dispatched to the commons at Bostwick Ave to respond to a report of a fight between three people. Upon arriving officers didn’t see anyone fighting. Eventually, the officers located two males at the south commons who were trying to fix their wagon full of belongings before they left campus. Upon being asked if they had been involved in a fight the two stated they had not, before saying that one of them and his girlfriend had gotten into a verbal argument over the wagon wheel breaking. Both of them were adamant that no fight had occurred and after running their names through the Law Enforcement Information Database and coming up with nothing, the officers let the two leave once the wheel was fixed.

Back injury at Calkins Science Building

On Friday, Oct. 25, at 3:39 p.m. an officer was dispatched to the GRCC Calkins Science Building on a non-emergency medical report. Upon arriving the officer met with the caller who was a GRCC student. He explained to the officer he had been lifting and moving 30-pound incubators on the third floor of the building when he twisted his back and felt a pull/ tear on the right side. He told the officer he was not planning on seeking medical care. The officer suggested he apply ice to alleviate swelling initially then heat later on to deal with pain.

Police connect woman in distress to mobile crisis response unit 

On Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 7:56 p.m. officers were dispatched to the main lobby of the police station being told that a woman in the lobby had recently lost her mother and needed to speak with officers. The officers escorted the woman to the second interview room within the department where she started the conversation by presenting a handwritten note and making accusations against her family and acquaintances ranging from human trafficking and sexual assault to animal abuse and murder. The accusations involved incidents across three decades and across state borders. According to the police report, “the woman proved articulate but not accurately coherent”, her notes in disarray and hard to read. She also provided multiple conflicting statements across the interview. The officer asked her if she was aware of any current crimes on campus that needed to be addressed but she was unable to accurately answer. The officer then asked if she was having any thoughts of self-harm or harming others and the woman stated she wasn’t currently but had in the past. The officer then explained to her that she was presenting issues that were beyond their ability to address and they would need external resources to address the problems she was presenting. Officers then called the Mobile Crisis Response Team who made contact with the woman and have in the past as well.

Damage to Property at Sneden Hall

On Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 7:32 a.m. an officer was dispatched to Sneden Hall on report of damage to property. Dispatch informed the officer that a member of the I.T. department had called to inform them that one of the signs giving directions to the buildings had fallen down. The officer arrived and located the pole for the sign and the sign itself on the ground nearby. Upon reviewing the security footage the officer found video of the sign falling at 5:12 a.m. with no one around when it did. 

Employee sustains burn while soldering at ATC

On Friday, Nov. 1, at 3:57 p.m. a man walked into the GRCC police department to report an injury. He stated to the officer he was soldering pipes in room K111 in the Applied Technology Center at Fountain Street at 3 p.m. when he received a burn to his left forearm. He continued working after the burn occurred, then ran the burn under cold water for 30 minutes. He stressed to the officer that the pain was very minimal, calling it a one out of 10. The officer gave him a paper copy of the employee injury form. He stressed to the officer he had no plans to seek medical attention unless it got infected. 

Trespasser arrested at Bostwick Ave

On Monday, Nov. 4, at 11:24 a.m. officers were dispatched to Bostwick Avenue on report of a man panhandling. Upon arrival, the officers made contact with the suspect who was sitting with two other people who claimed they were GRCC students. Upon being asked if the man asked them for money the students stated he did not and he had simply been talking about his life and other goings on. The officer thanked them and dismissed them. The suspect would state he was not panhandling and was trying to get into the GRCC welding program. The man gave his name to officers who discovered he had two outstanding warrants leading to the man being arrested. Information detailing what the warrants were for was redacted from The Collegiate’s copy of the report. 

Theft at Sneden Hall

On Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 3:18 p.m. an officer was dispatched to Sneden Hall on a report of the theft of a carpet extractor. Upon arriving the officer made contact with the facilities head custodian who led the officer to room 141, noting to the officer that a grey and red Minutemen mini extractor had gone missing. The custodian advised that he last saw it three weeks ago and had checked all the buildings on the DeVos campus but to no avail. The custodian stated his belief that it was likely borrowed by another custodian but a follow up under that theory failed to produce the extractor.

Theft reported at Ford Fieldhouse

On Monday, Nov. 4, at 2:17 p.m. a woman came into the GRCC police department to report money being stolen from her wallet while she was working out in the Ford Fieldhouse on Lyon Street. She told the officer that she had left her backpack and wallet in an unlocked locker in the locker room at 12:49 p.m. and when she returned at 1:46 p.m. she noticed a coin on the ground in front of her locker. Upon opening her locker she noticed her wallet was now sitting on top of her backpack. She also noticed $85 was missing from her wallet. She told the officer she only noticed one other woman in the locker room when she entered and only saw one other woman enter when she was inside.
