On Monday, March 3 construction began at Division Avenue from Michigan Street to Fulton Street.
The construction on Division Avenue, which is a part of a project that started back in 2024, will last several months. According to Tim Burckman, the engineer for the city of Grand Rapids, “We’re saying it will be complete in November but we don’t have a specific day yet but it will take the entirety of this construction season.”
The project will look to add a new water main, replace lead water services and separate combined sewers into dedicated sanitary and storm sewers in addition to replacing all sidewalk, curb, ramp and driveway approaches. The project will also look to install new ornamental street lights and move the curb on both sides to narrow the street. Bike lanes will also be raised to be level with the sidewalk and wider sidewalks will be installed on both sides of the street. New trees will be planted as well.
“It’s part of the city’s interests and intent in investing in projects like this one is to create a transportation network that is accessible and multimodal,” Burckman said.
The detour route going southbound will run through Pearl Street, Ottawa Street, Louis Street and Fulton Street. Northbound it will run through Fulton Street, Ionia Avenue and Pearl Street. Fountain Street intersection will be closed altogether.
