With summer beginning to kick into gear, students will begin looking for things to do in their off time. Luckily, Grand Rapids offers many activities for students to do this summer on an affordable budget. Here is a list of things to do around the city this summer.
John Ball Zoo
John Ball Zoo, a staple of the city of Grand Rapids, is a common place to go and spend a day during the summer. Located on Fulton Street, John Ball Zoo is less than two miles from the Grand Rapids Community College campus, making it a familiar location for most students. Adults ages 13-61 can get into John Ball Zoo for a price of $19.95— however, GRCC students and employees with a valid RaiderCard can get into the zoo for free. The zoo always makes for a fun day and, with a discount for students, it becomes even better.
Museums
Grand Rapids is home to many different museums around the city, with three of the notable ones being the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, the Grand Rapids Art Museum and the Grand Rapids Public Museum— all of which are located in downtown Grand Rapids. Admissions at the Gerald R. Ford Museum is free for students with a valid RaiderCard . The Art and Public Museums are also free for GRCC students with valid identification. The museums are a great way to connect with the city and learn more about the history of Grand Rapids.
Frederik Meijer Gardens
Another popular spot in Grand Rapids is the Frederik Meijer Gardens, which received over 785,000 visitors in 2024 alone. Located on the East Beltline, the Frederik Meijer Gardens is 158-acres and includes a sculpture park and art museum, as well as a venue for concerts. Students can get into Frederik Meijer Gardens for $16 with a valid student ID— prices will vary, however, for concerts. The Frederik Meijer Gardens offers a wide variety of fun activities for a nice summer day.
Millennium Park
Located on the southwest side of town, Millennium Park offers a beach, walking trails, boat rentals, fishing, basketball, volleyball and can be used as a spot to gather for a picnic or group event. Millennium Park is the largest urban park in West Michigan and spans over 1,400 acres of land. The park itself is free to visit— the only part of the park which requires a fee is the beach, at just $4for adults ages 16-62.
West Michigan Whitecaps
North of town, in Comstock Park, is home to the West Michigan Whitecaps— the Detroit Tigers’ High-A affiliate minor league baseball team. The Whitecaps have been an attraction for sports fans in Grand Rapids since their founding in 1994. The Whitecaps gives baseball fans an opportunity to watch up-and-coming talent in the Tigers’ organization. Tickets typically range from $12-22, and parking costs $10 the day of. The team offers plenty of different deals and promotions when they are at home, which can be easily accessed on their website.
