Grand Rapids Community College’s interim president, Steven Triezenberg, sent out a message to students and staff earlier this month updating them on the recent federal and state budget changes in the country and how it could impact their schooling.

“You may have seen the recent news about decisions being made by lawmakers in Washington, D.C., and Lansing,” Triezenberg wrote in the message to students. “While not everything is finalized, we want to keep you informed about what we know so far and how GRCC is planning ahead to support you.”

According to the letter, the federal budget that was approved will not affect students until the 2026-27 academic year with what seem to be very minor revisions for the college.

The interim president stated that students will be receiving an estimated $22.5 million for Pell grants, Pell-eligible students enrolled part-time will have some access to funding and full-time enrollment will still be held at 12 credit hours per semester.

Student loan limits have been altered, heavily impacting students attending graduate schools and all three of GRCC’s TRIO programs will be funded for the upcoming school year.

The letter also stated the advocacy of the college for program funding of workforce training programs, Michigan Reconnect and Community College Guarantee, and opportunities for students of all backgrounds to state legislators as they try to finalize the state budget for the year.

“We know it can be stressful to hear about government changes that might affect your education,” Triezenberg wrote, “Please know this: GRCC is here to support you. Our leadership team is working hard to protect the programs and services you count on because your success is our top priority. We’ll continue to share updates when we know more.”

When asked for a comment from the interim president on this message Lyndsie Post, Executive Director of Marketing and Communications, seconded that keeping students informed was important in an email to The Collegiate.

“We agree it’s important to share this information with our student community, and we’ve prepared the below message that will be sent to all students today outlining the federal and state budget updates and what they mean for GRCC. The message also includes reassurance the college remains committed to supporting students and protecting access to education.”
