Grand Rapids Community College is welcoming the Diatribe organization to campus for two free, immersive spoken word workshops this December.

“Both sessions are designed to complement one another by guiding students through the full process of storytelling and spoken word expression,”  says the Director of the Woodrick Center, Jamillya Hardley.

The two-part event, titled “Raising Voices – Cultivating Care,” is inspired by the legacy of Pauli Murray, a lawyer, activist, and poet whose groundbreaking contributions to civil rights and women’s rights.

“The first workshop centers on understanding the legacy of Pauli Murray and exploring how writing can be a tool for liberation, community building, and care. The second workshop builds on that foundation by offering more structured time for shaping, editing, and sharing their pieces,” Hardley said.

These workshops are open to all students, and no prior experience is required, making it an excellent opportunity for both aspiring poets and those simply interested in improving their public speaking skills. The workshop is set up to provide a progressive experience over the course of two days.

“If someone is hesitant, I want them to know that this space is built for beginners and experienced writers. Spoken word is not about perfection. It is about honesty, courage, and community,” Hardley said.

Students are encouraged to attend both sessions for the full benefit, but may also choose the time that works best for their schedule. Free lunch or dinner is provided with each session.

 Workshop Day 1-Dec. 2, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Student Center room 234

Workshop Day 2-Dec. 3, 4:30-6:30 p.m., Sneden Hall room 108

Lunch and dinner will be provided.
