An email was sent Monday, Feb. 9, stating that the campus would conduct a test of the Emergency Phone Alert System (EPAS) on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at noon. In the event of an actual emergency, this system would work to send important information and instructions.

Students and faculty were expected to receive a message through the GRCC phone system.

The email stated that “Desk and classroom phones will function as a public address system and play an audible announcement across campus.” The test message would have lasted no longer than about a minute.

Despite this heads up, the alarm system failed to go off.

The Collegiate reached out to Lyndsie Post, Executive Director of Marketing & Communications, who stated in an email that “A configuration error impacted the broadcast and it failed to go out.”

The Collegiate asked for further clarification about the configuration error and Post responded that she is looking into the issue. No more information has been received since.

GRCC Police stated in an email on Monday, Feb. 16, that campus police will conduct another test on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at noon.

The email also acknowledged “a previously scheduled test did not broadcast as expected due to a configuration error,” a message similar to what Post shared. Despite the broadcast failure, GRCC Police wrote that the “previous issue has been resolved, and this message is to confirm the rescheduled test.”
