Even if you are not an athlete at Grand Rapids Community College, there are still ways to get involved with sports. GRCC is offering intramural team sports for any student on campus at the Ford Fieldhouse and Recreation Center. These sports run every Wednesday and Tuesday Nights, and run until the end of the school year on April 26th.

How to get involved

To participate in these leagues, you must have your RaiderCard to scan in. You can sign up yourself and a team, or also just sign yourself up so that you may be assigned to a team.

What kind of sports are available

For the winter semester, GRCC is offering 4v4 mini soccer, which takes place every Tuesday and Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. on the Ford Recreation turf (Level 2) in the fieldhouse. Also available, 6v6 volleyball at the Ford Fieldhouse Arena gym on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6:45-8:45 p.m. Lastly, there is basketball available for open play from 6:45-8:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. To sign up visit GRCC.edu and visit the Ford Fieldhouse section and click on the registration link. Check-in will happen near the front of the south arena entrance, where you will fill out a waiver when you check in.

Why

The intramural programming at GRCC is part of a bigger cause. The recreation and wellness program helps support physical and mental well-being through social engagement, according to assistant Ford Fieldhouse director Andrew Rolls, who also oversees the fitness and wellness programming. “It is also a great way to meet a group of friends with similar interests to help build a community in hopes of increasing students’ sense of belonging here at GRCC”, said Rolls.

Currently, there are no plans to add other sports this semester, however pickleball, an increasingly popular sport, is a possibility. “I am open to running pickleball and learning to play if there is a group of students willing to schedule with me,” said Rolls.
