There are a total of 24 events happening on the Grand Rapids Community College campus in the week of April 6 -11. With a fashion show, the opening and closing of “Continuity,” and various events to enhance career skills, this week is not one to miss. Read on to know where to find free stuff and fun in the coming week:
Monday, April 6:
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Bio-Medical Club is having a “GRCC Community Blood Drive” in room 118 of the Applied Technology Center. Donating blood will take around an hour, and can be done by appointment or walk-in. To schedule an appointment, call 866-642-5663 or visit versiti.org/mi. Before donating blood, donors should eat a healthy meal and stay hydrated.
11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Center for Counseling and Well-Being is hosting “Escape to Self: A Road Map for Finding Inner Peace” as part of its Well-Being Workshop series, sharing information on tools to improve mental, physical, and social well-being at the Raider Grill (room 205 of the Student Center). There will be free food and parking passes.
Noon to 1:30 p.m. There will be a moderated discussion with Ashley Nickels and Danie Vilella, the editors of “Grand Rapids Grassroots: An Anthology,” in room 168 of the ATC.
3 to 4 p.m. FutureTech Careers is hosting “Microcredentials and the Science of Momentum” as a part of their Career Conversations series. David Pridmore is Program Manager of GRCC’s School of Workforce Training, and he will be giving a lecture on how small, visual milestones can progress into something employers recognize, while building confidence and momentum in growth. Students can attend the discussion both in person and online in the Applied Technology Center Auditorium, room 168, or on Zoom. RSVPs are encouraged, but not required, and the lecture is open to the public.
4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Staying RootED is hosting “Seeding Day” on the fifth floor of Calkin’s Science Center. For more information, visit their Instagram page @stayingrooted_grcc_.
5 to 7 p.m. Muslim Student Organization and the Bob and Aleicia Woodrick Center for Inclusion and Multicultural Affairs are partnering to bring “Meeting of the Hearts: Interfaith Dialogue” in room 336 of the Student Center. All students are encouraged to participate in conversation and connect with students over food and discussion.
Tuesday, April 7:
3 p.m. GRCC baseball will face Lake Michigan College, and softball will play Grace Christian University at Belknap Park. The games will be livestreamed on the GRCC Athletics YouTube channel. Admission is free for GRCC students and staff with a valid RaiderCard.
4:30 to 5:30 p.m. “Writers at GRCC” will be meeting in room 275 of RJF Hall. Writers of GRCC is a student organization open to any students who want to meet with other student writers and discuss literary arts. This session will open with a discussion over a specific writing concept, followed by freewriting activities designed to challenge students to try new things.
4:30 to 6:30 p.m. “Stand Out” will host its weekly meeting in room 219 of the ATC.
5 p.m. The GRCC softball team will once again face Grace Christian University at Belknap Park. The games will be livestreamed on the GRCC Athletics YouTube channel. Admission is free for GRCC students and staff with a valid RaiderCard.
Wednesday, April 8:
4 to 6 p.m. The Center for Counseling and Well-Being is having “Game and Gather,” where students can eat pizza and play games at Raider Grill, room 205 of the Student Center.
5 to 6 p.m. FutureTech Careers is having a lecture, “Debt Management 101,” as a part of their Career Conversations series. Vice President at Comerica Bank, Kevin Watkins, will discuss basic debt management, as well as money-saving tips for college students, and how to set up for financial success. Students can attend the discussion both in person and online in the Applied Technology Center Auditorium, room 168, or on Zoom. RSVPs are encouraged, but not required, and the lecture is open to the public.
Thursday, April 9:
10:30 to 11:30 a.m. FutureTech Careers is hosting “Elevator Pitches 101” as a part of their Career Conversations series. GRCC FutureTech Careers’ Education Training Specialist, Kim Tucker, will be sharing the importance of an elevator pitch, which is a quick speech that summarizes who someone is and what skills they offer. Students can attend the discussion both in person and online in the Applied Technology Center Auditorium, room 168, or on Zoom. RSVPs are encouraged, but not required, and the lecture is open to the public.
10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Campus Activities Board is partnering with Bio-Medical Club to have a “Gift of Life Drive” on the fourth floor of RJF. Gift of Life is a nonprofit organization devoted to curing blood cancer through cellular therapy. At this event, donors can get their cheeks swabbed to join the Gift of Life Marrow Registry, which will notify the donor if they match someone in need of stem cells. If the donor on the Registry has a match, they can choose to donate at that time.
11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Student Government and the Center for Student Life and Leadership are having a “Clothing Swap, One to Another Thrift Shop” in the Center for Student Life and Leadership office in the Student Center. Everyone is welcome to bring clothes they no longer wear and donate them to the campus clothing closet. There will be free food and free clothing at this event.
3 to 4 p.m. Rotaract is cleaning up Veterans Memorial Park, which is just down the street, about a half mile from campus. Gloves and bags are provided, and everyone is welcome.
4 to 6 p.m. Latino Student Union is hosting “Mexican Bingo Night” in room 108 of Sneden Hall. Mexican Bingo, or Lotería, is a game using 54 cards with iconic, colorful images instead of letters and numbers. Everyone is welcome to participate in this game of luck.
5 to 6 p.m. ASCEND Business Club is meeting over Zoom to discuss upcoming events and professional development opportunities.
7:30 to 9:30 p.m. GRCC’s Spectrum Theater is opening “Continuity” by Bess Wohl on Spectrum Theater’s Main Stage. Join the GRCC Players in a comedy-filled evening of dark humor, as a film crew in New Mexico tries to shoot a climate-change-themed thriller on a planet that is changing itself. As the crew races against daylight, the production echoes themes of ecological despair and environmental destruction. Tickets are $5 for GRCC students, $12 for GRCC faculty and staff, and $18 for the general public. After the opening performance, there will be a reception to celebrate the work of everyone involved in the production.
Friday, April 10:
2 and 4 p.m. GRCC baseball and softball teams will face Muskegon Community College in a doubleheader at Belknap Park. The games will be livestreamed on the GRCC Athletics YouTube channel. Admission is free for GRCC students and staff with a valid RaiderCard.
2:30 to 4:30 p.m. The Muslim Student Association is having its bi-weekly meeting in room 219 of the ATC. Everyone is welcome to come together and have meaningful conversations, whether to connect about Islam or just meet new people.
3:30 to 4 p.m. Cinema Society is meeting in room 219 of the ATC. Show up to discuss film in all of its glory, from the film itself to scripts, costumes, and historical and cultural contexts of films.
7 to 9 p.m. The Black Africana Student Union is putting on a fashion show in the ATC Auditorium, room 168. Everyone is welcome to see Michigan designers’ work on the runway as they enjoy drinks and music from a DJ. There will be a party after the show. This event is free to attend.
