On Saturday Feb. 3, the Grand Rapids Community College women’s basketball team played (1-17) North Central Michigan College and beat them 44-24 in a seemingly low scoring affair at the Petoskey Plastics Arena.
In the first quarter, GRCC was 4 for 11 (36.36%) on field goals, and 2 for 5 (40.00%) from the 3-point line. Freshman forward Lindsey Cross got things started for the Timberwolves with a two-point shot, giving NCMC a 2-0 lead. GRCC got its first points on the board after freshman forward Ava Schultz’ 3-pointer gave GRCC a 3-2 lead. GRCC outscored NCMC as they ended the quarter leading 10-4.
In the second quarter, GRCC was 3 for 16 (18.75%) on field goals, 1 for 9 (11.11%) from the 3-point line and 2 for 2 (100.00%) on free throws. NCMC’s Cross started the quarter off with a two-point shot to cut the Raider lead to four. GRCC freshman forward Kaylie VanDerHulst answered back though with a two-point shot to increase the Raider lead. The Raiders once again outshot the Timberwolves in that half as GRCC ended the quarter leading 19-12.
In the third quarter, GRCC was 3 for 18 (16.67%), 0 for 7 (0.00%) from the 3-point line, and 3 for 4 (75.00%) on free throws. NCMC freshman guard Gloria House got the quarter started with a 3-point shot to cut the Raider lead to four. A two-pointer by GRCC freshman forward Sophia Modderman helped GRCC answer back as they took a 21-15 lead with 6:14 to go in the third. The Raiders once again out shot the Timberwolves as they took a 28-17 lead into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, GRCC was 7 for 18 (38.89%) and 2 for 7 (28.57%) from the 3-point line. GRCC’s Schultz started off the quarter with a 3-point shot to make it a 31-17 lead. NCMC answered back with a two-pointer by Cross to cut the lead to 16. GRCC got their final end of game points from freshman shooting guard Noli Brown to give the Raiders a 44-22 lead off a two-point shot with 1:44 left in the game. GRCC won 44-24.
For GRCC, Schultz led the team with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Freshman guard Tia Richard led the team with four assists and five turnovers.
GRCC, now 7-11 overall and 4-3 in the conference, will head up to Mt. Pleasant to take on Mid-Michigan College on Feb. 7 at 5:30 p.m. at the Morey Courts Recreation Center.
