With temperatures reaching above 90 degrees Fahrenheit in Kent County during one of West Michigan’s hottest weeks on record, the time couldn’t be worse for the air conditioning to fail at the Grand Rapids Community College Learning Resource Center.
GRCC’s communication team sent a press release on June 18 announcing the unit’s failure.
Two days later, the LRC is still without a cooling system. Vice President for Finance and Administration Lisa Frieghbuger says the administration has moved the staff and faculty that occupy the building and are currently looking into the situation.
“We have temporarily moved occupants out of the building due to the heat and are evaluating next steps,” Freiburger stated via text.
Library services have been moved to rooms 214 and 231 of the Applied Technology Center, with academic support and tutoring available in room 219 of the ATC. The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is affected by this outage as well, with the Woodrick Center for Inclusion and Multicultural Affairs temporarily moving to room 303 of Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall.
The media technology center remains open in the LRC, with some of its cooling units still functional.
“Some of our offices, mainly just our server room, cooling systems is still working, so we’re able to spread that into the studio and into some of our production teams’ offices down there, so they’re able to stay fairly (cool),” said media support professional Janyxa Avalos.
Avalos said they’re still troubleshooting to figure out what the problem is, but the outage is expected to last until the end of the week and may extend to the end of the month into July.
