“I look around myself and it feels like a dream,” muses Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman in the trailer for “Holland,” about life in the titular city.
The synopsis on the film’s IMDB page says it’s about “a woman’s picture-perfect life in quaint Holland, Michigan (that) crumbles, when she and a friend uncover a twisted secret in their midst.”
It currently has a 37% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
On a campus about half-an-hour away from the focal point of the film, Grand Rapids Community College students have mixed opinions about it.
Ghufran Zahid said he appreciated the suspense and anticipation though the trailer and that it made him want to watch the movie.
“It’s the classic trailer for horror… it starts out as normal and then it goes to, like, random (clips),” said Brandon Mueller, adding that he’d “absolutely” watch the movie based on the trailer, but only because he lives in the area.
“You know, I don’t really know,” said David Mobius. “I think it has promise, but at the same time, I’m not really sure where the story’s going to go… it seemed a little confusing to me.”
He added that he thought seeing Holland represented on film was “really cool.”
Brady Thomas called it “pretty good,” especially since it took place in a city he was familiar with.
Jared Tobaison, a Collegiate reporter and Holland native, has more complex thoughts.
“I like how they kind of turned the whole idea of Tulip Time and all the Dutch dancing into some kind of control thing… it’s usually the same thing every year,” he said.
Tobaison also appreciated the commitment to showing “the good parts of Holland.
“I’m definitely interested to see this movie…I definitely have my own opinions about Holland in general,” he said with a laugh.
“Holland” premieres on Prime Video on March 27.
