Grand Rapids Community College students are encouraged to attend the ALAS Community Circle workshop hosted by the Woodrick Center for Inclusion and Multicultural Affairs in partnership with University of Michigan’s Transfer Bridges program. Guest speaker Leanne Challa from U-M Transfer Bridges will lead the discussion. The event will take place in person, Monday, March 16, from 12 to 1 p.m. at RJF Hall. Free food will be provided.
The Collegiate reached out to Joel Reyes Hernandez, ALAS Program Coordinator, and the Woordrick Center for Inclusion and Multicultural Affairs, who provided further information.
“The goal of this ALAS Community Circle workshop is to help students demystify how college systems work,” Hernandez stated. “Many of our students, especially first-generation and transfer-interested students, often feel overwhelmed by things like financial aid processes, choosing the right academic pathway, and understanding how credits transfer to four-year institutions.”
This workshop aims to provide clarity for students who may feel confused about the transition after GRCC.
Hernandez noted that this is the first time the Woodrick Center for Inclusion and Multicultural Affairs and Transfer Bridges have worked together.
“This will be our first time partnering with Transfer Bridges through ALAS, and we’re excited about the opportunity because many of our students are exploring transfer pathways to universities like U-M,” Hernandez stated.
Transfer Bridges is a program that supports community college students who are interested in transferring to University of Michigan.
Hernandez further explained, “Their program focuses on helping students understand transfer requirements, build strong academic plans, and navigate the application process.”
Rather than a strict lecture format, students can look forward to speaking directly with Challa, who will provide practical advice.
“Leanne will walk students through common questions and scenarios related to financial aid, academic planning, and transferring,” Hernandez stated.
Additionally, students are welcome to come prepared with their own questions, which may help them feel more prepared and comfortable about their college experience.
Hernandez affirmed, “Ultimately, we want students to leave the session feeling more confident about navigating college systems and understanding the transfer opportunities available to them.”
