Christmas in November

By: Josh Compaan

For anyone who doesn’t pay attention to the wide world of gaming, November is practically Christmas time. New releases abound as companies strive to put games on the shelves before the true Christmas season. I’ve tried to summarize the main highlights of November below.

A huge title released yesterday, November 8, to kick off my November Christmas. Behold Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 3 in all of its glory. It’s the third installment of the Modern Warfare series. Based on personal experience, this game should be great. The gameplay is similar to the previous installments as far as a First Person Shooter is concerned. This game will likely set records and become the new benchmark game for console war-games. Being honest though, I think this may be the last Modern Warfare game to be released – I just don’t know what else they can do to it. If Modern Warfare 3 is too much run-and-gun for your taste, I would suggest Battlefield 3 for a more tactical shooter.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the next big title to release and will be out on November 11. This is fifth installment of the Elder Scrolls series from Bethesda Studios. The Elder Scrolls series has been setting the bar for RPG’s for a while now. I anticipate this game is going to win awards. It wouldn’t surprise me if it actually takes home Game of the Year. Based on what I have found, Skyrim is going to dwarf Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. For many, the weekend is going to feel like this.

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations is slated to release on November 15. Again, this game is part of a series. Assassin’s Creed has done an amazing job of doing what everyone has always wanted to do. Be a crazy assassin who jumps from buildings and makes feel you as close to being a ninja as possible. This particular installment continues the storyline laid out from the first two games. It also continues to build on the multiplayer experience that was offered in the second installment of the series. This is going to be a great game, but will likely be overshadowed by Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3.

For anyone looking for an action-adventure style game, Batman: Arkham City will be releasing on November 18. Rocksteady Studios blew everyone out of the water with Batman: Arkham Asylum. I have yet to hear an entirely bad review about it. I would expect Rocksteady to be striving for a second success story with Arkham City. With such a solid base to work from, I think that Arkham City is going to get amazing reviews and will see a lot of love from gamers looking for a good story to bring back fond memories from their childhood.

Lastly, Skyward Sword is the newest Zelda game will be released exclusively for the Wii on November 20. As always, Zelda titles have always been solid games. As long as the Wii controls don’t take away from the gaming experience, I anticipate that all Zelda fans will be dedicating the back half of November to saving Hyrule. The most interesting part of Skyward Sword is that Ganondorf is not the main villain. Honestly, I don’t even know how to respond to that.

Enjoy! Happy shopping! Also, Girls — if you don’t know what to get your guy for Christmas and he likes videogames — pick one of the above games that he doesn’t own. They are all going to be solid.
