The Grand Rapids Community College women’s basketball team fell to the Muskegon Community College Jayhawks 65-55 Friday night. The loss puts the Raiders at 4-14 on the season.
“We got of to the bad start and No. 33 Rodriguez there drilled us for six 3-pointers early in the first half,” Head Coach John Maciak said. “What happens in basketball is that if you get down like that, the whole team can shoot a lot better.”
Abby Rodriguez led the Jayhawks with 19 points. After punishing the Raiders in the first half, she was held to a single point for the rest of the game.
“I thought Abby Rodriguez’s first half was phenomenal,” Muskegon Head Coach Rob Recknagel said. “She has potential to do that. She’s made six or more 3-pointers in I think four or five of our games. But I’d like to see her play two halves.”
GRCC freshman Kristen Schubring scored a game-high 20 points and earned a double-double with 17 rebounds.
The Raiders went into the half trailing 38-26. They managed to subtract two points off of that 12-point deficit but still came up short in the end.
“Basically it was those six 3-pointers,” Maciak said. “We lose by 10 and she scored 18. That was the game even though it didn’t look like it at first.”
Maciak still saw some positives despite the loss.
“Our team played with heart, and hustle, and effort,” Maciak said. “As a basketball coach, you don’t get a team like this that plays that hard for the whole game. They’ve done it for the whole year. So I give them the pat on the back, I give them all the credit in the world for having the fortitude to stick in there. It’s not easy.”
