Beginning with the winter 2020 semester, Grand Rapids Community College will be offering Saturday classes to students both in Grand Rapids and at the Lakeshore Campus. The move is intended to make college classes more accessible for those having to work around busy schedules at work and at home.
With GRCC officials noting that enrollment dropped by 3.6 percent from the fall 2018 semester to the fall 2019 semester, they were aware that there are people living in West Michigan who could take advantage of a Saturday class schedule.
According to a GRCC news release, classes that will be offered on Saturdays will include algebra, English, and sociology.
“GRCC offers high quality programs with excellent faculty and we want more people in West Michigan to access that quality,” GRCC Provost Brian Knetl stated in the news release. “A flexible schedule helps make us more accessible.”
The increased opportunities at GRCC are coming as Michigan state leaders set goals for increased higher education for the state’s population. Governor Gretchen Whitmer set a goal to increase the percentage of working-age adults with a post high school credential or degree from 44 percent in 2019 to 60 percent by 2030.
