The Grand Rapids Community College women’s basketball team traveled to Mt. Pleasant to play against Mid-Michigan College on Feb. 7. Despite freshman forward Ava Schultz’s 12 points, the Raiders suffered their largest loss of the season, 109-30.
The Raiders started the game off on the wrong foot with an early foul on sophomore guard Avery Jirous, allowing MMC to score some easy points early on. The rest of the first quarter was not kind to GRCC, scoring only nine points compared to MMC’s 30 points. The Raiders shot 4-14 from the field, had nine turnovers and five fouls. GRCC went into the second quarter down 30-9.
GRCC continued to struggle in the second quarter as they repeatedly lost possession of the ball and found themselves in some foul trouble. A technical foul was called against the Raiders with 8:21 left in the half, and they amassed an additional six personal fouls in the quarter. The Raiders headed into the second half down by 44 points, 59-15.
While the Raiders fared better in the third quarter, the Lakers continued to pull farther away. GRCC scored 10 points, which was the highest number of points they scored in a single quarter. Although the Raiders had nine turnovers, they also forced nine turnovers from MMC, allowing GRCC to score seven points off of turnovers. The Raiders were down by 60 points heading into the final quarter of the game, 85-25.
The final quarter proved to be difficult for GRCC, as they only scored five points. The Raiders were 2-12 from the field, amassed an additional six fouls and had four turnovers. The game ended with GRCC suffering their largest loss of the season, 109-30.
Schultz was the top scorer for the Raiders with 12 points, six rebounds and one block. Jirous scored four points, two assists and one steal.
Head coach David Glazier said that he believes that the team struggled to compete through adversity and communicate with each other. “I think our kids struggled with competing through adversity and communicating effectively,” Glazier stated via text.
GRCC is now 7-12 overall and 4-4 in conference play. The Raiders will hit the court on Feb. 10 against Bay College at 1 p.m. at the Ford Fieldhouse.
