Grand Rapids Community College Student Government and student leaders held their first town hall meeting of the winter semester this past Thursday, Jan. 22.
Tyler Anderson, Service and Technology Coordinator of Student Life, began the meeting by announcing a new time capsule that will be revealed at the grand opening of the Learning Resource Center in 2027. The sealed capsule will contain a plethora of items such as photos, written messages, and memorabilia from events hosted by GRCC student organizations, and more. The time capsule is planned to be sealed for 40 years and opened at the 150th anniversary of GRCC, which will be in the year 2064.
“As the current students, we would love to know and have a look back on what life was like as a student in the year of 2026,” Anderson said. The time capsule is planned to be created by the GRCC welding program.
Students are welcomed to submit their own ideas for what should be in the time capsule.
Itai Aharon, Treasurer of Student Government, went on to provide updates on the current budget and how the money has been spent. Campus Activities Board’s budget was at $69,000 back in September of 2025, and currently sits at $48,248.59. The money has been used to fund more student-engaging events and to create spaces for the student body to come together.
“There have been many great events so far in this semester from CAB; they’re using their money very well,” Aharon said.
Student Government’s current budget sits at $7,500.39 as of Jan. 22. The organization used money to give GRCC and Student Government merch to students and host campus events, including the upcoming Winter Involvement Day.
“Student Government’s mission is always to support students in whatever needs we see rising in that particular semester,” Vice President of Student Government Amelia Haywood said. “Student Government spends money to help the students.”
The dental assistance club went on to present an allocation request of $2,000 to help with hotel costs for their upcoming trip to Chicago. They previously asked for $2,500 to cover transportation costs, which was approved. The new request was approved on Jan. 22 unanimously.
CAB shared upcoming events for students to get involved in. On Feb. 11, Student Government and the Black Africana Student Union will be partnering to host a bouquet and card-making event just in time for Valentine’s Day. Then on Feb. 20, there will be a western line dancing event featuring music, free food, and other activities. This will be followed by a stuffed animal making event, therapy dogs, and a winter dance toward the end of the semester.
All event dates and locations can be found on Raider Connect.
The next Student Leaders town hall will be on Feb. 19 from 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m. in RJF room 108.
