Students at Grand Rapids Community College will have a chance to take a break from finals stress with a visit from therapy dogs on Monday, April 20, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The event is designed to give students a moment to relax, recharge, and step away from studying as the semester comes to a close.

“This is kind of in support of finals like a de-stressor or relaxer… for the students to be able to take a little time off of studying a moment,” said Andrew Sweeder, Assistant Director at the Center for Student Life and Leadership. “Pet some dogs, just be in a peaceful environment and then get back to their work as we conclude the semester.”

The event is being hosted in partnership with West Michigan Therapy Dogs, a volunteer group that brings trained therapy dogs to campuses, businesses, and community events across the region. Their visits aim to provide comfort and emotional support in high-stress environments.

Sweeder emphasized the importance of the collaboration, noting, “They’re very happy to work with us, and we’re very gracious for their partnership.” This will not be the first time GRCC has hosted therapy dogs, similar events earlier in the academic year were met with strong student turnout.

As finals approach, organizers hope the event will offer a simple but meaningful way for students to unwind. “The goal… really is just to provide some relaxation for the students as we start to wind down the semester,” Sweeder said.

Students are encouraged to stop by, take a break, and enjoy some time with the dogs before heading back to their studies.
