There are a total of 19 events happening at Grand Rapids Community College in the week of Feb. 23 – 28. Read on to learn where Raiders can eat for free and learn great things in the coming week…

Monday, Feb. 23:

11 a.m. to noon GRCC Chess Club is meeting in Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall room 511. All students are welcome to participate, regardless of experience level. 

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Center for Student Life and Leadership is hosting “Everybody’s Birthday Party” in the Student Life Hub of the Student Center. “This is meant to be a joyous celebration of you, you, and you, and everybody!” Student Life and Leadership Director Valerie Hargraves stated in an email, “It is meant as a midterm relaxer, and motivator focusing on celebrating one’s accomplishments, growth, and enjoyment of a sweet treat and community.” There will be free food.

11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Rotaract is having a “Winter Coat Giveaway” in the Student Life Hub of the Student Center. Stop by to get a free winter coat supplied by the Center for Student Life and Leadership. 

2 to 3 p.m. The Bob and Alecia Woodrick Center for Inclusion and Multicultural Affairs is holding “Islam 101: Beyond Media & Misconceptions” at the Calkins Science Center in room 204. Learn about values, traditions, and how understanding different backgrounds strengthens society. There will be an opportunity to attend this event online, too, with the link on Raider Connect. There will be free food and free stuff for those in attendance. 

Tuesday, Feb. 24:

12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The Center for Counseling and Well-Being is hosting “Stress Less,” as part of their Well-Being Workshop series, sharing information on recognizing and reducing anxiety at the Raider Grill (room 205 of the Student Center). There will be free food and parking passes. 

4 to 5 p.m. Writers At GRCC is having its first-ever meeting in RJF room 275. Drink coffee or tea and get to know other writers in the GRCC community. There will be free drinks provided. 

4 to 5 p.m. Muslim Student Association is holding its first meeting of this semester in RJF room 375. Catch up and discuss goals for the club as we enter the month of Ramadan.

Wednesday, Feb. 25:

12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The Center for Counseling and Well-Being is hosting “Cozy Crafts” at the Raider Grill (room 205 of the Student Center). Students are invited to join the Center for Counseling and Well-Being in a cozy gathering, with winter-themed crafts and light refreshments. There will be free food. 

1 to 2 p.m. The Academic Advising and Transfer Center is having a “Career Compass Workshop” in room 103 of the Lakeshore Campus in Holland. Students who are struggling to find a career path are encouraged to check this event out, as this workshop will help identify top skills and passions, then match those up to a job path. There are opportunities to attend virtually, too, with more details on Raider Connect

2 to 4 p.m. Black African Student Union is celebrating the 100th year of Black History Month in the ATC Banquet Room. Soul food and authentic African food will be catered, and there will be music to dance to and games to be played. Pictures and videos will be taken during the event. There will be free food. 

4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Woodrick Center for Inclusion and Multicultural Affairs is partnering with Transfer Bridges to host “Spoken Word – Raising Voices, Cultivating Care” in room 108 of Sneden Hall. Inspired by the life and work of Pauli Murray, participants will explore themes of identity, justice, and resistance with The Diatribe, a nonprofit organization devoted to art activism, speaking truth to power, transparency, intersectionality, and inclusivity. All students are welcome. Dinner is provided at 4:30, followed by the program at 5. There will be free food. 

4 to 7 p.m. The International Language Club is celebrating black and LGBTQ+ identities through showing “Moonlight” (2016) in room 234 of the Student Center, followed by a discussion about the film. “Moonlight” was the first movie with an all-African American cast to win an Oscar with a gay man as the lead actor. Join the International Language Club in watching an epic journey to manhood, guided by kindness, support, and love.

5 to 6 p.m. FutureTech Careers is hosting “Pathways to Cybersecurity with Richard Maloley II – Digital Elevation” as a part of their Career Conversations series. GRCC Alumnus Richard Maloley II is a Security Consultant and Ethical Hacker at Digital Elevation, a cybersecurity business based in Grand Rapids. Maloley will be discussing his path from GRCC student to cybersecurity professional, the various careers in cybersecurity, and how to become an ethical hacker. Students can attend the discussion both in person and online in the Applied Technology Center Auditorium, room 231, or on Zoom. RSVPs are encouraged, but not required, and the lecture is open to the public. 

Thursday, Feb. 26:

Friday, Feb. 27:

12 to 2:15 p.m. Latino Student Union and Woodrick Center for Inclusion and Multicultural Affairs are teaming up to celebrate Dominican Republic Independence Day. The  GRCC community is invited to learn about, reflect on, and celebrate Dominican heritage, highlighting the nation’s history, Indigenous roots, music, daily life, and cultural expression. The event will be at the Student Life Hub in the Student Center. There will be free food. 

3:30 to 4 p.m. Cinema Society is meeting in room 219 of the ATC. Show up to discuss film in all of its glory, from the film itself to scripts, costumes, and historical and cultural contexts of films.

3 to 5 p.m. Raider Nation Gaming is holding its weekly meeting in room 218 of Cook Hall. Show up to play games of all sorts– from video games to board games– and hang out with fellow gamers. 

3 to 5 p.m. The Woodrick Center for Inclusion and Multicultural Affairs is hosting “Real Talk: The biases on GRCC campus Part 1 Racism” in room 102 of Cook Hall. Real Talk is a student-run series cultivating a safe space to share experiences on campus, this one specifically discussing racism. There will be free food and free stuff provided. 

GRCC Men’s and Women’s Basketball is playing in the Michigan Community College Athletics Association tournament on Friday, Feb. 27, and Saturday, Feb. 28. The Raiders will be playing in Detroit.
