The Collegiate, the student publication at Grand Rapids Community College, took home 14 awards from the Michigan Community College Press Association (MCCPA) annual conference today.
The Collegiate staff took home second place in Division I for Online Newspaper.
Editor-in-Chief Kayla Tucker took home first place in the Student Journalist of the Year category. Tucker also got an honorable mention in the video production/online audio slideshow category for her Election Day news podcast.
Photo Editor Nathan Bidwell took first place for News Photo. Bidwell also got third place in the Sports News Photo category.
Sports Editor Avery Jennings landed first place for Sports Feature Story. Jennings also took home second place for Sports News Photo, as well as second place for Personality Profile.
Collegiate staffer Jakhari Carroll got third place for Sports Feature Story.
A&E Editor Matt Smith got an honorable mention in the News Story category.
Cartoonist Joanna Barcelo took second place in Division I for Editorial Cartoon.
Cartoonist Cienna Thorndill landed third place in the Division I Editorial Cartoon category.
The Collegiate Staff got second place for Editorial and third place in the Photo Essay category.
Also, Collegiate Adviser Jennifer Ackerman-Haywood was named President of the MCCPA.
The conference took place at Central Michigan University and featured a keynote speaker from John Hiner, vice president of content at MLive Media Group. There were then two conference sessions with various professional journalists and a luncheon and awards banquet. Community college students attending the conference were given tours of the student publications at CMU.
