The Collegiate’s weekly brief: March 23 through March 28

In addition to Student Employee Appreciation Week, there are 15 total events happening on the campus of Grand Rapids Community College in the week of March 23 through 28. Read on to learn about which student organizations are meeting, where to find free food, and dance the night away, over the next seven days:

Monday, March 23:

11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Center for Student Life and Leadership is partnering with the Bob and Alecia Woodrick Center for Inclusion and Multicultural Affairs, for the “Next Chapter Network Community Circle: AI for Students: Tools for Productivity” event in room 425 of Calkins Science Center. Students can attend to gain practical skills using Artificial Intelligence in an ethical and creative way to change their daily life. 

12 to 2 p.m. The Campus Activities Board is hosting “Stuff a Plush” where students can stop by to build their very own stuffed otter, to promote the River Raider. Each student is allowed to create one stuffed animal for free. The event will be happening both in room 234 of the Student Center, outside of Raider Grill, and the fourth floor of Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall by the elevators. 

Tuesday, March 24:

12:30 to 1:30 p.m. FutureTech Careers is hosting “How to Use LinkedIn 101” as a part of their Career Conversations series. GRCC FutureTech Careers’ Program Manager, John Rumery, will give a lecture discussing the importance of online networking, creating and optimizing a LinkedIn profile, and using online networking to advance in a career. Students can attend the discussion both in person and online in the Applied Technology Center Auditorium room 168, or on Zoom. RSVPs are encouraged, but not required, and the lecture is open to the public.

4:30 to 6:30 p.m. “Stand Out” will host its weekly meeting in room 219 of the ATC. 

4:30 to 5:30 p.m. “Writers at GRCC” will be meeting in room 275 of RJF Hall. Writers of GRCC is a student organization open to any students who want to meet with other student writers and discuss literary arts. This meeting will be centered on a brief discussion of a specific topic having to do with writing, followed by a creative writing exercise. 

Wednesday, March 25:

11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Center for Counseling and Well-Being is hosting “Your Time, Your Terms: Taking Control of Your Digital Habits” as part of its Well-Being Workshop series, sharing information on strategies to align technology use with habits that support well-being at the Raider Grill (room 205 of the Student Center). There will be free food and parking passes. 

12 to 1 p.m. The Library and Learning Commons is having an event relating to the campus common reading, with the event being called “Voices of Pride: Exploring the History of LGBTQIA Activism in Grand Rapids”. This event explores Grand Rapids’ LGBTQIA+ history through various mediums, from stories about local activists to old newspaper coverage. This event is happening at the ATC in the auditorium room 168. There will be free food for those in attendance.

2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The Foreign Affairs Club is having its weekly meeting in room 206 of Sneden Hall at the Devos Campus. 

5 to 6 p.m. FutureTech Careers is hosting an “AI Skills Workshop” as a part of their Career Conversations series. GRCC Professor Jonnathan Resendiz will give a lecture about why AI skills are important in entry-level positions, what prompt engineering is, and how to utilize it. Students will also learn how to build a custom AI tool using Google Gemini. Students can attend the discussion both in person and online in the ATC Auditorium, room 168, or on Zoom. RSVPs are encouraged, but not required, and the lecture is open to the public.

Thursday, March 26:

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Criminal Justice department is hosting “The Bench and Beyond: Perspectives on Social Justice with Judge Kellen Dotson,” its third Social Justice Series event. Judge Kellen Dotson is a judge in the 61st District Court in Grand Rapids, appointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in 2023. Students can stop by room 108 of Sneden Hall to attend the lecture and have a light lunch, courtesy of the Criminal Justice department. Register for the event here

4 to 5 p.m. The Social Sciences department is having a “Pauli Murray Cookie Hour” in White Hall at the Devos Campus. The session will be centered around the feminist and antiracist activist, Pauli Murray, and discuss takeaways in learning about Murray’s life over the last couple of weeks through various campus events, though attendance for previous events is not a prerequisite for attending this one. Those in attendance can enjoy free lemonade, a hot chocolate bar, cookies, and various sweet treats at this event. 

Friday, March 27:

2 p.m. and 4 p.m. GRCC baseball and softball teams will face Delta College in a doubleheader at Belknap Park. The games will be livestreamed on the GRCC Athletics YouTube channel. Admission is free for GRCC students and staff with a valid RaiderCard.

2:30 to 4:30 p.m. The Muslim Student Association is having its bi-weekly meeting in room 219 of the ATC. Everyone is welcome to come together and have meaningful conversations, whether to connect about Islam or just meet new people. 

3 to 5 p.m. Raider Nation Gaming is holding its weekly meeting in room 218 of Cook Hall. Show up to play games of all sorts– from video games to board games– and hang out with fellow gamers. 

3:30 to 4 p.m. Cinema Society is meeting in room 219 of the ATC. Show up to discuss film in all of its glory, from the film itself to scripts, costumes, and historical and cultural contexts of films.

7 to 10 p.m. Campus Activities Board is holding its annual winter dance in Secchia Piazza at the ATC. Tickets are free, and every student is allowed one non-student guest. The theme for the party is a “decades dance.” Students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite decade. There will be dancing, music, and free food. RSVP to the event on RaiderConnect
